UMass Memorial – Marlborough Hospital’s 19th annual Safe Summer Fun Day will be held on Saturday, June 3rd from 10 am to 2 pm. This free, child-oriented health and safety event took place on the front lawn of Marlborough Hospital at 157 Union Street, Marlborough.
The event’s claim to fame is every year, several hundred free bike helmets are fitted and given away by trained Marlborough Hospital caregivers. The event also features many hands-on hospital exhibits and educational booths created and supported by hospital staff, Board Trustees and members of hospital-affiliated councils, such as our Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC). Community partners also participate in the event to create opportunities for the local community to explore emergency vehicles, learn new ways to stay healthy, promote summer safety for kids and their families, and to get to know their neighbors. The UMass Memorial Health Care Life Flight air ambulance offers tours of their rescue helicopter as well. This year’s long-standing and supportive community partners include The Cottage Children’s Center and Villaris Martial Arts, both located in Marlborough.
The day also features fun, family-oriented activities such as an obstacle course, a trackless train, balloon animals, games and free bike raffles. A DJ provides fun and family-appropriate music throughout the afternoon. A barbecue of hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided by Marlborough Hospital’s Union Street Café and Morrison Foods for a nominal cost.
“Safe Summer Fun Day is a huge event in so many ways,” states Steve Roach, Marlborough Hospital president and CEO. “It not only draws a great crowd of thousands, but it helps the hospital connect with the community and serve as an educational resource. It reminds our neighbors that we are here to help keep them healthy because that is how a community thrives. Though, it’s also fun to give away free bike helmets and bikes. It’s a great way to keep kids safe and families informed.”
